Men's Moissanite: Rings, Chains and Studs

Men's moissanite is not women's jewellery in a bigger size — the scale, the setting depth and the finish all change. Most of what is sold to men is either too thin, plated too lightly, or set so high it catches on everything. Here is what to look for in rings, chains and studs.
Why moissanite suits men's pieces
Two reasons, both structural. First, hardness: at 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite takes the knocks that a softer stone would not survive in a piece worn daily and not removed for the gym. Second, size per dollar — men's pieces are large by design, and a 6.5mm stone set into a wide band or a Cuban link would be prohibitive in diamond and is not in moissanite.
Our men's range runs from $28 for a plain silver band to around $450 for wide rings and heavy chains in solid gold.
Men's rings: width and depth
The single biggest difference from women's rings is band width. Men's bands typically run 6mm to 10mm; women's run 2mm to 3mm. That width changes everything downstream.
Sizing. A wide band fits tighter than a narrow one at the same stated size, because more metal contacts the finger. Size up half a size when going from a 3mm band to an 8mm one. This is the most common cause of a men's ring being returned.
Setting height. Men's rings should sit low. A high prong setting on a ring worn while driving, lifting or working will catch constantly. Look for flush or gypsy settings, or a bezel — the stone sits level with the band surface and nothing protrudes.
Comfort fit. The inside of the band should be slightly domed rather than flat, so it does not cut into the finger at the edges. On an 8mm band this is not a luxury, it is a requirement.
Metal choice. 925 silver with rhodium is the practical default — hypoallergenic, hard-wearing, and it does not discolour skin. Solid 9K–18K gold for a ring worn for decades, or where the budget allows. Men's hands tend to be harder on plating; expect a re-plate every year or two on silver if worn daily.
Chains: the piece most often bought badly
The failure mode with men's chains is weight versus clasp. A 4mm Cuban link in silver looks substantial and is comfortable; a 6mm hollow link looks bigger and dents the first time it is leaned on.
Solid versus hollow. Ask directly. Hollow links are lighter and cheaper and they cannot be repaired once dented. A solid link costs more and lasts decades. On a chain above 5mm, solid is the only sensible choice.
Clasp. A lobster clasp on a chain above 30 grams will fail eventually. Look for a box clasp with a figure-eight safety, or a fold-over clasp.
Length. 18 inch sits at the collarbone, 20 inch just below, 22–24 inch on the chest. For a Cuban link worn over a shirt, 20–22 inch reads best; under a shirt, 18–20.
Finish. Rhodium-plated silver is bright white and stays that way. Unplated silver develops a warmer patina and needs polishing. Both are legitimate; they are different looks, not different quality.
Our men's Cuban link range runs 4–6.5mm in 925 silver from $52.
Studs: the piece with the most sizing mistakes
Men's studs are typically 5mm to 8mm. Below 5mm reads as a small accent; above 8mm reads as a statement and needs a heavier ear to carry it without pulling.
Back type matters more than size. A push-back on a 7mm stone will sag forward within a month. Look for screw-back or a large friction back with a disc. Our studs ship with screw-backs on the larger sizes for exactly this reason.
Weight. A pair of 8mm moissanite studs in silver weighs enough that a thin post will bend. Ask about post thickness if the size is above 6.5mm.
What to avoid
- Plated brass sold as silver. "Silver tone" means brass with a coating. It will discolour skin within months and cannot be repaired.
- Hollow links on heavy chains. They look right in photos and dent in real life.
- High prong settings on any ring worn to work. The stone will catch, the prong will open, the stone will go.
- Sizing a wide band at the size you wear in a narrow band. It will be too tight — size up half.
Care, briefly
Same method as any moissanite: warm water, a drop of dish soap, soft brush on the underside of the stone. For chains, lay them flat to dry rather than hanging wet, because wet links stretch under their own weight.
Silver chains tarnish in air — store in a sealed bag, not on a hook in the bathroom.
